Jewellery trends 2014: What to wear right now

Don't be fooled by our warm temperatures - winter in the southern hemisphere is definitely here! And as you trade long, languid days by the pool for cosy winter nights in front of the fireplace, be sure to prep your wardrobe and jewellery for the new season too!

The must-try jewellery designs for South Africa's Autum/Winter 2014 season are bold, colourful and embellished. Perfect for keeping your spirits up during these long winter days. Here are a few favourite trends:

Radiant Orchid:

Colour authority Pantone's 2014 colour of the year is Radiant Orchid. This vibrant colour combines fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, and will pop up in fashion, interiors and jewellery design. Pantone Colour Institute's Executive Director, Leatrice Eiseman, describes this hue as an ''invitation to innovation''. Take up the challenge and invest in fuchsia accented jewellery! Radiant Orchid looks particularly effervescent when paired with gold. Look out for stones, crystals, rhinestones and glass beads in this purple-pink hue.

Bold Links:

The Gavin Rajah 2014 collection has arrived! Ready to wear and ultra-feminine, this collection combines crisp white shirts with luxe fabrics.Rajah's latest fashion offerings were paired with gold cuffs and bracelets with bold link designs. There is only one rule when copying this look: the bigger, the better!

Embellished Collars:

Intricate sequins and embellished collars featured prominently at Yuna Yang's recent 2014 New York Fashion Week show.

Also at NYFW, never to be outdone by international talent, local fashion darling, David Tlale, wowed audiences. His collection, titled ''Elementary Metropolis'' picked up on the collar trend - with some of his designs featuring ornate Peter Pan necklaces.

For a versatile take on this trend, opt for an OTT collar necklace. This can be paired with anything from a plain white T-shirt to a fabulous black cocktail dress.

Black and Gold:

London-based (South African-born) jeweller Kirsten Goss's characteristic geometric designs are adored the world over. We love her new collection of black and gold deco drop earrings. To get the ''black and gold'' look, try layering strings of vintage black glass with chunky gilt chain necklaces.

Whether you decide to wear an expensive statement piece, or to accessorize with costume features, enjoy this season dominated by over-sized pieces in gold and bold colours.
